He was an exceptional character actor whose movie career spanned fifty years from 1928-79, including roles in “The Westerner”, “Bombardier”, “The Fighting Seabees”, “She Wore A Yellow Ribbon”, “The Bad Seed”, “To Kill A Mockingbird”, “The Sons Of Katie Elder”, “El Dorado”, and many more. His television work included numerous appearances on “Perry Mason”, “Wagon Train”, “Gunsmoke”, “The Zane Grey Theatre”, and “The Big Valley”.

He is more famously remembered for playing Dr Piper in the second pilot episode of Star Trek entitled ‘Where No Man Has Gone Before’ before being replaced by DeForest Kelley as Dr. McCoy. Rumors report that Paul Fix taught John Wayne to walk the way he did. They were friends when Wayne first started acting and Wayne wanted something to set him apart, so Fix suggested the rolling gait that became his trademark
